I didn’t know the answer to this so I googled it http://burro.astr.cwru.edu/stu/earth_moon.html
Apparently there are 4 theories about how the moon was formed. One of the theories is that a planet roughly the size of Mars crashed into the Earth when it was quite young. The planet crashed into the Earth so fast that it was completely destroyed it almost destroyed the Earth. The crash caused tons of rock and debris out into orbit. These rock fragments eventually coalesced (joined together) to form the Moon.
