Yes, I didn’t want to do what they were doing!

Nope, not at all. Thannkfully, I never felt any pressure to do something that I didn’t want to do. I think they trusted me not to grow up to be a bank robber. They also realised that I didn’t have the coordination to play ice hockey.

My parents were always very supportive of me and helped me every step of the way. Neither of them are scientists, so I think them being proud (and a bit amazed/scared!) of what I was achieving spurred me on.

They’re always very interested in what I’m doing and still encourage me and have a supportive word when the work is piling up and it’s all getting a bit too much for me.

My mum always encouraged me to work hard at school and had pretty strong views on the benefits of a university education. Luckily I loved school and couldn’t wait to go to university. Science was always my passion and I don’t think that she understands fully what I do everyday but she is always supportive.
