I’m still very early on in my science research career, but the investigations I have enjoyed the most were ones that I did all by myself. I decided on the questions I was asking, the materials to test it on and how to perform all the tests. I also had to teach myself a lot of physics, which I haven’t done since GCSE. But I felt so proud teaching it to myself and using it in my own experiments. I also learnt how to work with lasers, which is really cool!

Another tough question! I’ve been working in the lab for 3 years now so I have done lots of different and exciting experiments. I think that one of the best investigations led to me forming new aerogel materials using cellulose nanowhiskers. This had never been done before and the process to make them is very simple. Cellulose nanowhiskers are renewable and biodegradable which makes them excellent starting materials for many things such as aerogels. This investigation has led to a patent and a publication which is super exciting and something that all scientists aim towards!
